Cockleshell Afghan

The Cockleshell Afghan joins my family of DND afghans! DND means DONE ‘N DONE. When you put the last stitch in place, you have absolutely no additional finishing! Well… except to weave in the yarn end!

With cockleshells all lined up in a row!  Mary, Mary, quite contrary, just knows how her afghan grows! Fast and easy! the stitch pattern combines classic shells and clusters to create an open lacy effect with perfect vertical lines.

Spend 12 minutes and watch the partner video tutorial How to Crochet the Cockleshell Afghan. Hidden in this video are additional tips and tricks to expand your crochet skills while learning this fun and easy stitch pattern.

This pattern features three elements that speed the process along. First,  the DND foundation rows and finishing row create simple edgings that hold the lacey openwork in place. Second, crochet built-in borders along the sides as you go! Third, one color keeps the focus on the cockleshell stitch pattern.

Lighter tones of color accent the stitch pattern. Choose neutrals if you want the blanket to go with any décor. But I have to admit, I was smitten with Red Heart’s Aruba Sea, a gorgeous blue that takes the seaside theme to the next level!  Avoid dark colors as the stitch pattern will drown!

Using commonly available 4-ply acrylic yarn and an H crochet hook, the afghan has all the streamlined production features. You only need to count on the first row to set the stitch pattern. From then on, it’s really obvious what’s next.

With lots of  weddings on the horizon, the Cockleshell Afghan is a go-to super favorite!
