Sticks and Stones Afghan

The Sticks and Stones Afghan belongs to my family of DND afghans! DND means DONE ‘N DONE. When you put the last stitch in place, you have absolutely no additional finishing! Well… except to weave in the yarn end!

Easy V stitches and clusters create a lacy effect and remind me of sticks and stones! Hence its name!

This pattern introduces several techniques. First, the DND foundation rows and finishing row create a simple edgings that hold the lacey openwork in place. Second, crochet built-in borders along the sides as you go!

Third, a single color not only speeds the project along but it keeps the focus on the sticks and stones. Select a light color to really make the Sticks and Stones stitch pattern POP! A neutral color like soft white, pale gray or beige will go with any décor. Pastel colors like periwinkle, maize of lavender would make great options if you choose to pick up an accent color. Avoid dark colors as the stitch pattern will just be swallowed up!

Using commonly available 4-ply acrylic yarn and an H crochet hook, the afghan has all the streamlined production features. You only need to count on the first row to set the stitch pattern. From then on, it’s really obvious what’s next. You can really get into a rhythm.

This pattern is a partner pattern for my video called How to Crochet the Sticks and Stones Afghan. Watch and crochet along!

With lots of post-pandemic weddings on the horizon, the Sticks and Stones Afghan will surely become a favorite!
