Striped Square Afghan

Designed by good friend and lifelong machine knitter, Ronnie Soltysiak, the striped square afghan is a fun and economical machine knitting project.

Pay attention as we proceed through setting up the needles for the stitch pattern, shaping with increases and periodic shortrows, changing colors and finishing the panel with a fun half-cable border. The pattern also includes lots of machine knitting hints and tricks.

This is the companion written pattern that goes along with the video How To Machine Knit the Striped Square Afghan. This tutorial is presented in 3 parts.

In part 1, you will learn to make Panel A which includes the basic stitch pattern, shaping technique, tips on changing colors, and the border. Each panel comes off the machine already edged in a half-cable border leaving just 3 stitches to finish! You will need to make 2 separate Panel A’s.  Shaped like a triangle, each panel starts from just one stitch and grows as the rows are added. The tuck stitch pattern stretches after it comes off the machine so your only limit is how many needles you use.

Part 2 builds on part 1. You will learn how to knit Panel B which joins the panels together as you go. When you take the afghan off the machine, you are practically done. But you will also learn how to finish the corners.

Because this pattern is scrap-yarn friendly we added a bonus session. In part 3, learn the best way to divvy up and combine even the smallest bits of mismatched-leftover yarn into the Striped Square Afghan. It’s fun and economical!

So, let’s delve into this fascinating machine knitting project.
