This is the companion pattern for the video How to Straighten the Moss Stitch Ripple and the video Starting Straight with the Moss Stich Ripple.
Technically there are four different circumstances that present themselves when filling in to straighten the edge. In this pattern, we will start by working the gaps on the final row of the ripple pattern where we will address the first three variations. Then we turn our attention to the foundation row.
On the final row of the moss stitch ripple, you have two half-valley sections and one valley section. One of the half-valley sections occurs on the right edge and the other on the left. The valleys sections repeat across the entire row between the peaks of the moss stitch ripple.
These variations surprisingly are quite similar. As with most crochet, it really is a matter of starting and ending and where you place the hook! And that information is all in the pattern!
If you turn the work around, what were the depths of the valley become the peaks on the edge on the foundation chain. From this new perspective, you need only one valley section which fills the spaces and repeats across the entire foundation row.
Alternatively, you would have no need for straightening the moss stitch ripple foundation edge if you follow this alternative method. Instead of filling the spaces in the foundation row as an afterthought, you could actually plan a straight edge. In this case you would make a series of small moss stitch triangle motifs. These would replace the foundation chain and be joined when the first full row of moss stitch ripple is crocheted.
