Railroad Rib Cap and Scarf Set

All aboard! Thick and warm, the railroad rib cap and scarf will chase away the blustery winter winds. The fold-up brim doubles to keep those ears nice and warm. This is the companion pattern for the video tutorials How to Crochet the Railroad Rib Scarf and How to Crochet the Railroad Rib Cap.

The railroad rib features the half-double crochet stitch. The secret to achieving this unique rib is all about the placement of the hook. If done correctly you will see the rails running across each row!

The railroad rib cap is the perfect complement to the railroad rib scarf. The pattern includes two variations, the cap and  beanie, plus two sizes for the scarf. The cap has the fold- up brim for very cold weather. The beanie offers an “Autumn” version which features  a picot edge. Also included in this pattern are instructions on how to shape the crown of the cap using an easy shortrow technique so the cap hugs the head ever so comfortably.

4.25 oz of Caron Simply Soft Tweed – Heather Gray yarn and an H (5mm) crochet hook is an excellent choice of yarn.  This yarn is a little lighter that most worsted and the elasticity is wonderful. But… you can substitute other worsted weight yarns. I find the stitch gauge is easily matched but the row gauge is a different matter. Since this pattern relies on the elasticity of the rib, I’ve also included special notes about substituting yarn.

Whether crocheting for a man or woman, the Railroad Rib cap and scarf set will keep your loved ones protected from the cold!
