Magic Mushroom Borders

To address all your creative ideas, the Magic Mushroom Borders pattern includes 3 variations  You can go  all-the way-round; from side-to-side and of course, upside down! So, no matter what your project, you can trim like a pro!

The first is All-Around where you crochet the border in the round.  With just a few rounds and one contrasting color you can turn a plain piece of knitting or crochet into a masterpiece! The mushrooms just pop with excitement which makes it the perfect edging for a blanket… Although why limit yourself? Think about trimming a sweater, sleeves, neckline! Loaded with extra tips and techniques, watch the companion video tutorial How to Crochet the Magic Mushroom Border All-Around.

Go back and forth with the second variation,  Side-to-Side.  Watch the video tutorial for this variation: How to Crochet the Magic Mushroom Border Side-to-Side! When you crochet the border only on one or two edges of a piece, how you start and end each row differs from working in the round. Hence, the instructions accommodate the beginning and ending of each row. Designed to complete an edge or be added after the piece is finished, it comes in handy. Think necklines or finishing both ends of a blanket. If added to both ends of a scarf, however, the edges will be quite attractive but when worn the mushrooms will be upside down on both ends.

And that brings us to the third, but not least variation, the Upside Down border! It simply turns turns the mushroom on its cap! Why? Because who wants mushrooms upside down on the end of a scarf, hat, sweater? The video tutorial for this variation will be availble in October 2024!

The real reason is because the magic mushroom pattern is directional. And, this one is designed to be attached with the mushroom stems facing outward or downward. This variation  also presents two other  options. Start the piece with the border insert, then continue crocheting the piece.  Or, attach the border insert later. Since the outside edges of both options are straight, the border begs for a final edging row. Although optional, the pattern includes an easy  scalloped edging that would finish the edge nicely.

If using worsted weight yarn and an H hook, the borders are approximately 3 to 3.5 inches wide!
